All heavenly bodies—our earth, its sun, planets, stars—are surrounded by an invisible force field that spreads out into the space between them. Likewise, the human body (and indeed all life) is blessed with its own energy field which is not only interwoven with the physical but also interconnected with unseen realms beyond. Just as the sun’s rays can affect the earth’s magnetic field, vibrations from other dimensions can create fluctuations in the individual human biofield and energy anatomy. Conversely, the current condition of the inner core within the physical, whether it’s the earth or the human body, can affect the surrounding field of energy. It is as though we are all heavenly bodies powerfully interconnected through the space within and around us.

Quantum physics has demonstrated that the boundless space within our universe (we call it outer space) is not empty, but full of an unnameable energetic essence that underlies and pervades all life. Since energy and matter are interchangeable on the quantum level, the inner ocean within our bodies contains the timeless and formless energy that affects all the elements of life, but like the outer oceans on our planet, there is much that is unseen and unknown. The spiritual and scientific exploration of inner space has only just started to recognize that this realm is a great repository of awareness and wisdom. The true potential of our innate healing ability will most likely lie within dimensions of reality that we have just barely touched upon. Like an iceberg, the big picture of what is ultimately possible for human beings can only be seen below the surface.

Therapies that go beyond the energetic anatomy within the body to include the etheric realms and the invisible, luminous energy field that permeates and surrounds the physical body. This energy field actually contains a progression of layers of fields that are connected to the internal energy centers and extending out from the physical body to the infinite reaches of the cosmos to the divine. Depending on the context—biological, scientific, quantum, or spiritual—it is referred to as the subtle energy body, the etheric field, the unified field, the biofield, the aura, the electromagnetic field, the bio-plasmic field, the bioelectric field, the bioenergy field, the noetic field, the morphogenetic field, or the divine energy field. Each of these names is used interchangeably in the text, but essentially mean the same thing. This multidimensional area can be considered an overlapping and interlocking dynamic matrix of subtle energies that holds the blueprint to all that we manifest, whether in the past, present, or future. It can also be described in terms of vibratory frequencies and as the domain of the more expansive higher self that exists on the soul level or in the realm of the divine. It is essential to realize that these realms, though difficult to visualize, do not pertain just to some distant heavenly place, but to the infinite possibilities within each of us. I sometimes liken energy fields to the unknown weather beyond the horizon, which is governed by the vast and ever-changing planetary atmosphere and can potentially have a direct effect on my well-being.

Treatments carried out on energy fields operate outside the familiar framework of our known reality, so it is difficult for most of us to comprehend how they work, what the effects could be, or how subtle changes that are beyond words actually occur during the healing process. This is definitely the case with some of the empathic, vibrational “miracle healers,” psychics who speak with angels or intuitives who work in and beyond the three-dimensional earthly realm of reality. But the transference that happens when the healer invokes, connects, and harmonizes with the divine universal energies and uses them to enhance the energy and well-being of the recipient is definitely a subtle, felt experience shared by the two. Life teaches us that something can be recognized as real, even if it isn’t fully understood. When investigating these modalities, it is best to be open-minded and take it all in. If what you find doesn’t resonate with you, forget about it and don’t worry, for someday it might, especially when your life experiences allow it.

The interrelationship of the energy fields and the bio-electrochemical activity in the body and in the pathways of the nervous system that determines the condition of the whole body has been recognized by adepts, yogis, and spiritual leaders in ancient Eastern cultures for thousands of years. Contemporary researchers have now begun to grasp the extent of the interrelationship of the human body, mind, and spirit and how it can offer a more holistic approach to health and healing. The time is ripe for complementary medicine’s perceptive healers and therapists, those with the ability to intuitively see, sense, and feel the more subtle realms, to be welcomed with more open minds and eyes. We can hope that the influence of energy fields will soon be recognized as part of our own natural and innate ability to create a more enlightened and healthy way of life, full of vitality and love.

The therapies included in this section treat blockages, dysfunctions, and deficiencies in the energy fields primarily by enhancing and balancing the flow of energy in and around the body. Although the multidimensional fields of energy extend far beyond a person’s body, most of the therapies work on the auric field, the portion of these fields which can be seen by those with extrasensory ability. According to specialists in this discipline, there are seven layers of energy fields surrounding the body, although twelve have been recognized by other enlightened souls. It is generally agreed that the seven biofields (or energy bodies) extend out from the physical body into the universe in this order: lower etheric body, lower emotional body, lower mental body, astral body, etheric physical template, celestial emotional body, and finally ketheric mental body.

Although each is essentially contained within all others, these fields stretch out in layers of varying thicknesses—from a few inches to several feet beyond the physical. Each field correlates with certain human qualities and the seven chakras found within the physical body. The energy bodies close to the physical body can be seen as an aura of different colors by those with this intuitive gift; these colors reflect the condition of each of the fields. Beyond these seven, there are an additional five energy fields that connect the physical body to the soul and to the divine infinite realm of the universe. These higher fields are also considered causal bodies in that they have the energetic capacity to influence our lives, and each has a particular deep connection to our ultimate state of existence here on earth. Expanding outward in every dimension, these higher-self fields are referred to as the soul star realm, manasic realm, buddhic field, atmic realm, and the monadic realm, though other names have also been used. There are only a few modalities in which intuitive practitioners work with these subtle realms, but since we are each innately connected with these fields, it is possible for us to learn how to make contact with them.

Many of the therapies that work with energy fields believe that a problem in the physical body is caused by imbalances in the biofields, since this is where the physical body’s blueprint exists; therefore, working on these fields will have a direct effect on the health of the physical body. However, some of these modalities do use the body’s internal energy pathways to influence the fields around the body. In most cases, there is very little actual physical contact made during the treatment session. Energy healers will instead use highly refined intuition, sensory perception, energy-based disciplines, or altered meditative states of loving consciousness to enable them to effectively scan, feel, or see mental and emotional blocks in the energy field. Once intuitive healers have identified weaknesses or disease in the physical body by observing variations in the colorful spiral vortices of energy in the aura, they can proceed to use subtle methods to alleviate any imbalances and restore equilibrium.

Captain LeCain W. Smith: The author, LeCain W. Smith, learned early in life that his personal path to awakening was through ocean sailing, bodywork, and transformational energetic experiences. When living on the sea, making friends with the elements and with nature, he uncovered his passion for adventure, exploration, fitness, and health. He spent many years studying and experiencing bodywork and practicing yoga, qigong, breath-work, and meditation. This passion, combined with seeing numerous friends struggle with health problems, eventually drove Smith to reach out and help others through the writing of this book. If this endeavor changes the life of only one person, he will consider it a success.
