BMC is an approach to movement education that stimulates self-discovery through exploring the body’s systems and enhancing awareness of movement patterns that were developed during infancy or childhood. It allows people to experience an intimate connection with their inner anatomies so that they can learn how the mind expresses itself through the body in motion. This approach was developed by occupational movement therapist Bonnie Cohen after extensive study and practice of Aikido, Zen, Occupational Therapy, Laban Movement Analysis, yoga, dance therapy, neurodevelopmental therapy, and a variety of both Eastern and Western forms of bodywork. Her early life experiences with circus performers also affected her knowledge of body movement.
BMC is based on the idea that the body is an instrument through which the mind is expressed, and its aim is to allow a more intimate experience of the body itself by stimulating deeper sensory awareness of internal organs, tissues, and body systems. The recipient is then invited to initiate all movement from this state of expanded awareness. Each part or system of the body is associated with a particular state of mind and its attendant feelings, expressions, thoughts, intuitions, expressions, or nervous energy. When the quality of its movement is altered, beneficial physiological, psychological, or spiritual changes are created in the whole being. Many habit patterns used for survival since early childhood and held deep in the body can be transformed in this way.
The practice combines hands-on bodywork, dialogue, behavior repatterning, guided imagery, yoga, music, dance, guided movements, art, psychotherapy, and elements of Aikido, along with the use of playful props such as large balls and metal bands, into a session that is customized and tailored to the needs of the individual. The practitioner uses physical contact to inspire individuals to make a shift into more thoughtful patterns of movement. When participants find a gentler, more flowing, and highly self-resonating way of moving efficiently, they can drop limiting patterns, find new strength and flexibility, and embody their fullest potential.
